ONW vs Wyandotte Final

Overview

For our final in my E-Comm class, we had to go to the ONW basketball game vs the Wyandotte Bulldogs. Then we had to bring the footage back and edit it to make a story. We had 2 different options in terms of how we made our video, and then we also had to make a written story about what happened in the game.

This was my edited story over the game. I chose to pretty much just do a game recap, with some other stats that I threw in throughout the video.

ONW vs. Wyandotte

Overview

On Tuesday, December 15, the ONW Ravens took on the Wyandotte Bulldogs for the first home game of the season. The Ravens went into the game with a 2-2 overall record.

The Ravens started off the game strong, with points being scored from all over the court. They continued the same dominance throughout the whole first half, dominating the boards and also putting lots of pressure on the Bulldogs. Going into the half, the Ravens were up 27-9.

Coming out of the half, the Ravens didn't let up. They continued to put pressure on the Bulldogs, stretching out the lead even more. The Raven post players dominated the game, posting big numbers in both the scoring and rebounding columns.

Junior Matt Vanderslice led the team in scoring and rebounds, with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Jack Parks also had a dominate game, scoring 15 points and coming away with 6 rebounds.

The Ravens came away with the win, beating the Bulldogs 63-24. Coach Grove was very pleased with the win, saying "We did a great job if handling their pressure and punching the ball inside", he also said, "The guys did a good job of containing the ball and defensively rebounding".

With this win, the Ravens improve their record to 3-2. Going on from this, the Ravens will take on Shawnee Mission South, at Shawnee Mission South, where they will hope to grow from this dominate performance.

Swim and Dive Pre-Season

Overview

We went to one of the swim practices and filmed the swim and dive team. We also interviewed the coach and asked him his thoughts about the beginning of the season.

What I learned

I learned that it's important to have a good interview setup, and it's also important to check the sound on the mic before we do the interview.

Overall

I think that the shots we used were good and interesting but we could've done a lot better on the interview and the overall story.

Player Interviews

Overview

This year, the E-Communication program decided to make different documentaries about the different sports teams here at NorthWest. The goal was to make these videos, and then sell them to the parents of the different athletes in order to raise money for the program. My job during these was to help with some of the interviews. I interviewed some of the different football players, and also helped with some of the other interviews that were put on.

Overall

Overall, I think the idea is really good. The actual TV shows called "Hard Knocks" are really interesting and it would be cool to see if the program can actual put on something like that.

This is a segment called athlete of the fall, but the interview in it was used in the documentaries, which I help set up.

Coach of the Fall

Overview

In this video, we interviewed Coach Sherman about what his views and values for coaching are, because he was voted as the Coach of the Fall sports for his excellent season with the football team.

Overall

I think that this was a good tory, and it shows how good of a coach he is, and why they had as great a season that they had.

ONW NOW #10

Overview

In this week's edition of ONW NOW, we feature Veterans Day, Ap Courses, Plagiarism, and the Week of Giving Recap. I ran the sound during the live shooting of the show. Overall, I think it was a very good show that we produced, it was informative and had good stories.

ONW NOW Overview

Overview

This year, I was assigned to run the sound system for our student news segment "ONW Now". Running the sound was pretty confusing at first, because the school bought a new sound board, and we had to learn all of the new things that came along with it.

Problems

The main problems we encountered involved  having all of the different inputs set the same way. The soundboard has around 16 different inputs, and with all of the different E-Communication classes working in the same area, some of those inputs are bound to be messed with. Then, when we went to go film ONW Now, the sound would sound off so we'd have to go through the different inputs and see what was wrong.

What I Learned

I've learned a lot since the beginning of the year, like how to turn up the "Gain" system, in order to make the sound louder. I've also learned how some of the inputs work, and what they're connected with. I think the sound system has made a big improvement since the beginning of the year also, because we've learned how to work the sound system efficiently, and effectively.

This was our first production of ONW Now, from about 2 months ago.

And this was one of our most recent productions, I think there is a big difference in the sound quality from the 1st edition.

Golf Season Recap

The Lady Ravens golf team had a very successful season finishing 6th at regionals and 2nd in the sunflower league. Sophomore Rosie Klausner had the most success this season. Abby Julo was the most improved among her teammates. There were many memorable moments this golf season, one of which Abby Julo broke her career round high school record shooting an 84. Rosie also won her second playoff, taking second at regionals. The Lady Ravens hope to have the same success next year as they did this season.

Sessions with Kami

Overview

One of the other ONW students, Kami Gibson, does a segment where she takes different people from around the school who have interesting talents, and films them doing what they do. We've filmed painters, singers, rappers, and many other things. My role in her projects has been that sometimes I've filmed and other times I've been there as an "Audience Member" where we react to the person being filmed, and ask them questions.

Overall

I think that this segment is interesting and it is cool seeing other students from ONW and their interesting hobbies.

In this segment we filmed a kid who could sing and play the guitar. My role was to hold one of the cameras in order to get different angles and shots.

Football Games

Overview

When the Olathe Northwest football team plays at home, we go out and actually put on a live stream, with announcers and everything. Iv'e had a couple of different jobs during these productions, I ran the tricaster, where I had to choose all of the shots that were being filmed and tell the camera people what shots to film. I also ran the scoreboard at the games for the stream, so the score that you saw over the computer was me running it.

Overall

It took a little learning but I think that the streams are interesting and a really cool idea. I also think that the commentators we have do a very good job talking the whole time, and have a very good knowledge in the sport and both teams that are playing.

Here is just an overview of one of the football games that I went to against Lawrence High.

End of Season Tennis Recap

The Lady Ravens’ tennis team had a tough season, finishing 11th of 12 in the Sunflower league.
While the season might not have been the best, Coach Oberhelman appreciates the effort his team put in, especially from senior, Annemarie Boeh.
Oberhelman appreciates how she came back from being very ill and worked very hard to be able to play again. Oberhelman also has hopes for next season, saying that they have some younger kids coming in who are excited to play for the Ravens’ tennis team, and thinks that they will be successful in years to come.

In this week's edition of ONW NOW, we feature behind the scenes of the all school musical, locker shortages, astronomy class, Gameday Northwest, and more.

Tennis vs Aquinas

Overview

In this video, I went out and filmed the Girl's Tennis match against Saint Thomas Aquinas. This was the first video project I did, and I really didn't know what kind of shots were necessary to put together a good story.  I didn't really like this video because the shots weren't very interesting and overall I just don't think it's very good.

What I learned

I learned that a variety of shots are key to making the story interesting, and it's important to have interviews, so you can add to the story and make it better.

Overall

I didn't really like this video because the shots weren't very interesting and overall I just don't think it's very good.

This was the video that I filmed and then other people helped edit the whole thing.

Final

Overview

Our final for graphic design was to work in a group to create an  "original" product, and then create a box template and a 3-D image of the product.

Our Product

We decided to make our product "Ball in a Box". It pretty much is just like it sounds, it's a ball in a box. We made it that because we get bored in class a lot, and when you have the ball in the box you can just pull out the ball and shoot it in the box.

Overall

From this project, I learned that communicating with your group is important when you want to get something done. I also learned how to add different images into a template without making them looked too squished. I think that the hardest part of this project was coming up with the idea and then brainstorming what we wanted the box to look like. But after we got done, it was fairly easy.

Jeter Spray

Overview

For this project we had to come up with a product and then create a box template and 3-D design based on what we want the box to look like.

Process

I started out doing a tutorial on lynda.com to make the box template and the 3-D design. Then I started adding images and ideas to my box. The product I chose to do was called "Jeter Spray" and my friends and I decided to make all of our products sort of the same so that we could make them a set.

This is my box template, I had to do a tutorial to learn how to do this.

This is what I wanted the actual box to look like, with all of the designs on it.

This is my logo design, I had this on the front of my box and the "spray bottle"

What I learned

During this project I learned how to make a box template and I also learned how to 3-D revolve different objects. I also learned how to put images onto the 3-D revolve. I think the hardest part about this project was making the box template because whenever I did the tutorial, it didn't work like the guy who was doing it.

Revised Blog

Carp

CARP stands for Contrast, Alignment, Repetition, and Proximity. Contrast means that the colors and the fonts all go together well. With alignment, usually you will see text that is aligned to the left. Repetition is when the style repeats itself, like the text fonts and the alignment. And proximity is how close together things are and how well they are spaced.

Layout

I decided to use a layout for my blog that I thought looked nice and also got my point across for all of my posts. The colors I used are eye catching and make the blog pop out more.

Before/After

Before I used CARP on my blog, it looked bland and unorganized. But after I used CARP, all the sections were spaced out and I also have some links to go to different websites that have more on the topic.

Movie Poster

BackGround

In this project, we had to create a "Saul Bass" style poster based on a movie that we like. A Saul Bass poster only has 2-3 colors and is able to show important elements of the story in only 2-3 images.

Process

I decided to do "The Dark Knight Rises" as my movie poster because I liked the movie a lot and I thought I could make a cool poster based on the movie. We had to start out this project by drawing a couple sketches of what we want it to look like and then we transferred that idea onto the computer. The main problem that I had with this project was that it
was hard to find the right color way for the poster and it was also tough finding the right font for the poster.

Outcome

I really liked the way my poster turned out because it has minimal colors and it also has the main elements of what the movie is about.

Custom Type Tutorial

In this tutorial we had to follow a tutorial to make our name blend together. We will also be able to use this tutorial for our title on our movie posters that we are making. I used a custom font and what I did to make it my own was expand out the letters and then also changed the spacing between some of the letters. I also lined up the l and the h so it made it look like one long line and I thought it looked pretty cool too.

My Top Ten List

In this project we created a "Top Tens" list based on what things we value the most. So what I chose are either my favorite things or things that I value a lot. In my list, I included Family, Michigan, My favorite restaurant, My favorite Movie, baseball, KU, The Royals, Money, My phone, and NetFlix.

Choosing the right fonts and typefaces was also an important part to this project because you want to get your point across about why you chose a certain object, and the rights fonts and sizes can help you get that point across. It also helps organize you poster better when you have the right fonts and sizes. I chose the fonts "PT Sans (Italic Bold), Open Sans Regular, and Minion Pro because I wanted a sophisticated looking poster.

What I learned from this project was that our values can tell a lot of things about ourselves, and typefaces can too. This was also the first time that I used InDesign and the first time I created a grid layout and made a poster to be printed.
